Australian back-rower Matt Ryan will miss the rest of the Wakefield's Super League season after being told he needs to have a shoulder operation.
Ryan, 26, who joined the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats from Parramatta in the winter, is the only player to have appeared in all 22 matches this year but has been defying a painful shoulder injury in recent weeks.
"He'll go in for an operation next Wednesday so that will be him for the season," coach James Webster said.
"He's had it for a while and didn't want to know the full extent until I made him go and get a scan - he wanted to carry on playing.
"He's done a good job for us but it probably typifies our season in that we've had to patch people up for a long period of time but we don't have to do that any more.
Wakefield secured their survival in Super League thanks to a five-match unbeaten run under Webster, which came to an end in Perpignan last Saturday.
