Mavs withstand Portland fightback in NBA

The Mavs had a 44-14 second-quarter cushion wiped out and trailed 98-92 with 4 minutes, 26 seconds remaining, but they kept their poise down the stretch.

The Dallas Mavericks regrouped after blowing an early 30-point lead and closed out the game with an 11-0 run to beat the visiting Portland Trail Blazers 103-98 on Friday.

The Mavs had their 44-14 second-quarter cushion wiped out and trailed 98-92 with 4 minutes, 26 seconds remaining, but they kept their poise down the stretch.

With the contest knotted at 98-apiece, Devin Harris hit an off-balance runner off the glass and an ensuing free throw rebound put Dallas ahead by three.

Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge then threw a pass out of bounds intended for the cutting Damian Lillard with 19.7 seconds left.

Monta Ellis made a steal but missed a pair of free throws. However, Vince Carter grabbed the offensive rebound and made two from the stripe with 17.8 seconds left to seal a rollercoaster win.

Elsewhere, James Harden poured in 16 of his 28 points in a game-breaking third quarter to lead the Houston Rockets to their 13th win in 15 games, 112-86 over the East-best Indiana Pacers.

David West had 15 points and 10 rebounds in Indiana's worst defeat of the season.

Kenneth Faried scored a personal-best 32 points as host Denver Nuggets rocked the defenceless LA Lakers 134-126.

Spaniard Marc Gasol had 18 points with 10 rebounds to power the visiting Memphis Grizzlies to an 85-77 win over the Chicago Bulls, who lost for the just the third time in 14 games.

Kevin Love collected 28 points with 14 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 114-101 victory over the visiting Detroit Pistons, while Carmelo Anthony tossed in 29 points and handed out a season-high eight assists as the New York Knicks drummed the visiting Utah Jazz 108-81.

The New Orleans Pelicans beat the league-worst Milwaukee Bucks 112-104, the Boston Celtics bounced the visiting Brooklyn Nets 91-84, the Charlotte Bobcats dropped the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers 101-92, the Golden State Warriors caged the visiting Atlanta Hawks 111-97 and the Toronto Raptors topped the visiting Sacramento Kings 99-87.
