Maxwell can fire in Tests: Mike Hussey

Mike Hussey, who played 79 Tests for Australia, says Glenn Maxwell has the talent and ability to fire in the longest format.

Glenn Maxwell's unique approach at the crease and rare ability to turn a match could be a boon for Australia's Test side, according to Mike Hussey.

Maxwell has played three Tests, the most recent in 2014, but will come under serious consideration for the tour of Sri Lanka that starts in July.

David Warner has pounded Test attacks around the world, swinging momentum in a single session.

Maxwell is similarly potent and Hussey suggested it was that aggression that made him a strong candidate for Test selection on the subcontinent.

"The thing that makes him so attractive is that he can score runs so quickly," Hussey said.

"If it's a tricky situation in a Test match, he can really take the game away from the opposition.

"That x-factor streak ... that's what makes him really hard to play against. Sometimes you're not sure what's going to happen and he can take the game away from you very, very quickly.

"We don't even know what's going to happen in the dressing room."

Maxwell always does according to Hussey, who has been coaching the Victorian during the World Twenty20.

"He's definitely got the game for it (Test cricket), there's no question," Hussey said.

"The talent and the ability ... and if you actually look at his first-class record I think it's pretty good.

"Obviously he's a gun in the field and he can definitely help out with the ball as well. He's a pretty attractive package."

The allrounder boasts a first-class batting average of 42.21 but averages 13.33 with the bat from his six Test digs.

In Maxwell's defence he has batted in five different positions during his Test career, many of which were foreign to him.

"The last Test he played I think he batted No.3 which is probably not the ideal spot for him," Hussey said.

"He's probably better coming in a little bit later in the order, say five or six or something like that and you'll probably see the best cricket from him.

"He's got a good understanding of the game in general and a good understanding of his own game."
