Maxwell learned from wake-up call: Smith

Glenn Maxwell has been recalled to Australia's ODI side, with skipper Steve Smith terming the allrounder's axing a 'wake-up call'.

Glenn Maxwell has been recalled, with skipper Steve Smith hoping the allrounder has cleared his mind and learned from a "wake-up call".

Maxwell will return to Australia's XI for their ODI tri-series clash with South Africa, which starts at 3am AEST on Monday.

Maxwell played the side's opening two matches of the series then sat on the sidelines for their next two.

The Victorian, who was dumped after totalling nine runs from his previous five ODI knocks, hadn't been dropped from Australia's one-day team since November, 2014.

Then it was a case of missing a single game as selectors mulled their options ahead of the World Cup.

This time there was a clear message from on-duty selector Trevor Hohns and stand-in coach Justin Langer.

"We know what we want from him, it's a bit more consistency and that's what the selectors have told him," Smith said.

"He sat out the last couple and hopefully that's been a bit of a wake-up call for him.

"Hopefully he's continuing to learn and hopefully he'll get amongst the runs in the next couple of games.

"I had a word to him the other day just about clearing your mind and going out there and just playing good cricket shots. I think we've seen when Maxi is at his best he's actually not thinking too much."

It was a public fall from grace for Maxwell, who had seemingly cemented his place in the team after being named ODI player of the year at January's Allan Border medal count.

The tap on the shoulder stung the star.

"He was pretty disappointed initially. It took him a while to get used to the idea he wasn't playing," Smith said.

"But I think the last week or last couple of days he's turned his head around.

"He's worked very hard on his game in the nets and done a few things in the gym to try to improve as a cricketer."

Maxwell was promoted to the side ahead of Travis Head, who made his ODI debut in the loss to West Indies in St Kitts.

"I watched him bat pretty closely in the nets yesterday and I thought he played particularly well, especially against the fast bowlers," Smith said.
