Steve Smith says next month's domestic one-day competition will give Glenn Maxwell an ideal chance to make an irresistible case for a national recall.
Maxwell produced an astonishing unbeaten knock of 145 during a Twenty20 match in Sri Lanka earlier this month.
But the mercurial allrounder was dropped from the ODI side earlier this year and remains out of favour with national selectors in that format.
Maxwell, crowned the country's best one-day player earlier this year at Allan Border medal night, was overlooked for the five-match ODI series in South Africa that starts next week.
Smith urged Maxwell to remind selectors of his value while representing Victoria during the upcoming one-day tournament.
"We'd like to see him really dominate the Matador Cup," Smith said.
"I want to see him do extremely well in that. There's no reason why he can't be the leading run-scorer and take plenty of wickets ... just make it irresistible for selectors to pick him.
""He performed very well in the T20s in Sri Lanka but the one-day guys played incredibly well and we won that series 4-1.
"The selectors have openly come out and said they want some more consistency from Glenn."
Meanwhile, Smith was looking forward to seeing how uncapped quicks Chris Tremain, Daniel Worrall and Joe Mennie performed on the tour of South Africa.
Star pacemen Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were both rested from the series against the Proteas that starts on September 30.
"It gives a couple of guys an opportunity. We get a chance to get a look at the likes of Tremain, Worrall and Mennie," Smith said.
"Hopefully they'll take that opportunity with both hands."
