New Zealand captain and son of Dunedin, Brendon McCullum, has been awarded the keys to the city of Wellington for his record-breaking innings for the Black Caps at the Basin Reserve.
McCullum's courageous 302 in the second Test salvaged a draw from a seemingly hopeless position against India earlier this week.
Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said the award was a fitting recognition of McCullum's achievement to be the first New Zealander to reach a triple century, ensuring a Test series victory over India.
"Brendon's innings was a study in talent, determination and perseverance, reaching 302 off 537 balls over two full days in the middle," she said in a statement.
"Brendon's magnificent innings will be remembered for decades to come by the thousands of people at the Basin, and the tens of thousands of others who stopped everything in the middle of a working day to witness sports history being made."
