McCullum double ton for NZ sets new record

Brendon McCullum has joined an exclusive Test batting group which is headed by Australian icon Don Bradman.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum joined a small list of cricket luminaries on Monday when he reached a double-century against India in the second Test in Wellington.

McCullum passed 200 off the first ball after drinks midway through the second session on day four as he and wicketkeeper BJ Watling continued their mammoth sixth-wicket partnership.

When he clipped Zaheer Khan off his pads for four, he joined former skipper Stephen Fleming as the second New Zealander to score three double-centuries.

The 32-year-old has made all three against India - 225 in Hyderabad in 2010 followed by 224 in the first Test of this series in Auckland a week ago.

He also becomes the eighth cricketer to score double-centuries in successive Tests.

The feat was achieved three times by Australian icon Don Bradman and twice by English great Walter Hammond in Ashes series before World War II.

Since then, just India's Vinod Kambli, South African Graeme Smith, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and Australians Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have pulled off the "double-double".
