Canadian ice hockey centre Connor McDavid has signed a record-breaking $C100-million ($A101m) contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

The contract, which will start at the beginning of the 2018-19 season and last for eight years, will have an average annual value of $12.5 million, making it the highest salary in the NHL.

"I'm so excited to wear the Oilers jersey for the next nine years of my life and play with some of the greatest guys that I know, and I can't wait to get back at it," McDavid, 20, said at a press conference in the city.

"I wanted to show my commitment to the Oilers organisation, the fans, the city - show that I'm in it for the long haul and I want to win here."

The deal follows a stellar last season for McDavid, who was awarded the Hart Memorial trophy as the league's most valuable player, after scoring 30 goals and providing 70 assists.

The Oilers, who won the Stanley Cup on five occasions in the 1980s but have struggled to be competitive in recent years, managed their first play-off appearance in 11 years last season.

"This is a city that I think has such a rich history and it's so important that we bring that back," McDavid said on Wednesday.

"We got a taste of it last year and we certainly have some unfinished business."
