McEntee wins bronze at Carlsbad 5000

Australian distance runner Sam McEntee has claimed third place at the 5000m Carlsbad 5000 in California.

Australian Olympic middle-distance runner Sam McEntee has taken bronze in the Carlsbad 5000 in California.

The 25-year-old, who missed the 5000m final at last year's Rio Olympics, ran 13 minutes and 51 seconds, 24 seconds behind winner Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia.

Gebremeskel won the race for a record fifth time, 20 seconds ahead of American Rio Olympics silver medallist Paul Chelimo, after victories from 2011-14.

Gebremeskel, who won an Olympic silver medal at the 2012 London Games, opened a big gap at the 3000m mark and held up five fingers as he crossed the finish line to signify his five Carlsbad victories.

Viola Lagat of Kenya won the women's race in 15:35, beating Shannon Rowbury of the US by 10 seconds.

Third-place finisher Aisha Praught of Jamaica clocked the same time as Rowbury (15:36)
