McEwen 'talking and laughing', family says

The family of Michael McEwen have taken to Facebook after the injured man woke from a coma after being bashed in Bondi a week ago.

A man left critically injured after being bashed in Bondi last week has woken up and is "talking and laughing", his family says.

Michael McEwen, 23, was left unconscious after being punched and stomped on in front of dozens of revellers in the early hours of last Saturday at the corner of Campbell Parade and Roscoe Streets in Bondi.

He remains in St Vincents Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police on Sunday said they had charged a 23-year-old man at Bondi Police Station over the attack.

On Facebook, Michael's father Robert said his son had woken up and reached out to him.

"The happiest day of my life. Michael reached his arm out to me. My boy is back!" he said on the social networking site.

Michael's sister Claudia also took to Facebook, saying Michael was exhausted, but had his "cheeky personality back".

"Michael is awake! Talking and laughing, but still very exhausted ... The first thing he said to me was, `Claud, bring me some food. They haven't fed me all day'."

Police have charged the alleged attacker with affray and breach of bail.

He will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
