McGrath backs young quicks without Johnson

Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath thinks there are plenty of young quicks pushing their way up in the absence of injured Mitchell Johnson.

Fellow fast bowler Glenn McGrath thinks Australia's young quicks can get the job done without their spearhead Mitchell Johnson.

On day two of the fourth and final Test against India at the SCG, the former Australian paceman said Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris and Mitchell Starc would enjoy the chance to lead the attack.

McGrath said the Sydney Test would be an important opportunity for Starc, who has been under pressure to perform since he was called in to replace Johnson, ruled out with a hamstring injury.

"(Starc's) a wicket taker, there's no doubt about that," he said on Wednesday.

"He may not have the control that other bowlers like Josh and Ryno (Harris) have, but... when he gets his confidence up he's tough to beat."

The cricketing legend said Harris was a quality bowler, and Hazlewood had a big future.

"I'm a big fan of Josh. This is his home ground, he's big, tall, strong ... gets good bounce," he told Fox Sports.

"I saw a few balls yesterday really take off so I think that'll work in his favour."
