St George Illawarra will confirm on Thursday they have re-signed coach Paul McGregor on a two-year NRL deal.

McGregor was considered the most under pressure to keep his job at the start of this season.

However, the Dragons have shocked their critics over the opening 13 rounds to sit third on the ladder, and have the best attacking record in the competition.

They have called a media conference for Thursday morning, when it's understood McGregor's future will be confirmed.

The news will come as a massive boost to the Dragons ahead of Monday's clash with Canterbury - who are enduring their own difficulties at the midway point of the season.

McGregor's future was thrown into question at the end of last year when a review was conducted into the club by former Bulldogs chief operating officer Dirk Melton.

Former player Mark Coyne was appointed to a high-performance committee, while recruitment and retention responsibilities were taken away from McGregor.

The Saints have since flourished, winning eight of their opening 12 games to sit just four points behind competition leaders Melbourne.

McGregor, a former Illawarra Steelers and Dragons centre, took over as coach midway through the 2014 season.

He took them to the first week of the finals in 2015, but the club finished 11th last year before this season's revival.
