McInnes moves in on Souths No.9 role

Issac Luke's is helping to groom the successor to his role as Rabbitohs hooker, youngster Cameron McInnes.

Issac Luke's parting gift to South Sydney is to help prepare his successor, Cameron McInnes.

Luke was earlier this year granted an early exit from his contract to take up a lucrative deal with the Warriors, with McInnes shaping as his likely replacement in the Rabbitohs No.9 jersey.

After making his NRL debut last season, McInnes has been in and out of coach Michael Maguire's side. Apisai Koroisau was preferred at No.9 for last year's grand final win, after Luke was suspended by the NRL judiciary.

But with Koroisau no longer a feature at Redfern after joining Penrith this year, the club is putting its faith in McInnes, including the out-going Luke.

"Next year there is a big opportunity for me," McInnes said.

"I have been in reserve grade the last few weeks, but now for me it is about learning off Issac while he is still here and improving week to week, so I can become a regular first grader."

With Luke suspended for Saturday's round-19 clash with St George Illawarra at the SCG, McInnes, 21, has a chance to put the Kiwi international's advice into practice.

"It was a great experience making my debut there at the SCG last year," McInnes said.

"It is a really special place for me and I'm looking forward to getting back there this weekend.

"It is always good coming up against the Dragons, it's always a challenge."
