Former Tasmanian Greens leader Nick McKim will be sworn in as a senator on Thursday.

He replaces Christine Milne who led the minor party in federal parliament until May when she announced her retirement.

"As they say, objects in the rear vision mirror are closer than they appear. I'd say that to the rest of the country, Tasmania is coming," he told reporters outside Parliament House on Thursday.
