McMahon ready to step up for Wallabies

Wallabies flanker Sean McMahon says he's ready if needed to fill in for the injured David Pocock in the second Test against England.

Sean McMahon has put his hand up to fill the vacancy left by injured Wallabies star David Pocock for the second Test against England.

Pocock will miss the remainder of the series with a fractured eye socket and Rebels flanker McMahon says he is willing and able to step up if required for the clash at his home Super Rugby venue, Melbourne's AAMI Park.

"Poey's a great player and it's unfortunate he did hurt his eye last night," McMahon said on Sunday.

"But the coaches will choose the team they want to go with and if I get the opportunity then I get the opportunity - I'll take it with both hands."

McMahon came off the bench in Saturday's 39-28 loss at Suncorp Stadium to make his seventh Test appearance, but many feel the 21-year-old's form is deserving of more time in green and gold.

However, like with Liam Gill, Australia's wealth of top-quality flankers has limited McMahon's opportunities at Test level - until now.

It all hinges on if coach Michael Cheika opts to play a traditional No.8 or persists with two opensides in his back row set-up.

McMahon will gratefully accept whatever comes.

"Getting a start or even getting a bench spot in the gold jersey means everything to anyone that wants to be a Wallaby," he said.

"Any chance you get's a chance, you're still doing the job."
