McSweyn set for worlds after 5000m blitz

Australian 5000m runner Stewart McSweyn has run a time inside the entry standard for the world championships, at a meet in Dublin.

Australian 5000m runner Stewart McSweyn is set for a world championships berth after breaking a 37-year-old meet record.

McSweyn ran a personal best of 13:19.98 at the Morton Games in Dublin on Thursday, finishing more than eight seconds ahead of second-placed countryman Collis Birmingham.

The 22-year-old McSweyn broke Irishman Eamon Coghlon's 1980 record by three seconds and shattered his previous personal best.

McSweyn's time is inside the entry standard (13:22.60) for next month's world championships, all but confirming him for the selection.

Australia will take up to three 5000m runners to London, with McSweyn likely to be among them but forced to wait on results from countrymen at meets leading up to the August 4-13 world championships.
