Meares and Perkins medal at cycling cup

Anna Meares and Shane Perkins have medalled to complete a successful World Cup cycling meet for Australia in Mexico.

Anna Meares and Shane Perkins added to the Australian medal tally with podium finishes on the final day of the UCI Track World Cup in Mexico.

Australia collected nine medals during the three-day event, including five gold, one silver and three bronze, and finished second on the medal tally behind Great Britain.

Less than 24 hours after becoming the first woman in history to break the 33 second barrier in the women's 500m time trial, Anna Meares was at her world record breaking best again, this time in the women's sprint qualifying.

Meares, the reigning Olympic sprint champion, wound it up in the flying 200m to produce a stunning time of 10.487secs to break the world record of 10.573secs set earlier in the year by Tianshi Zhong (CHN) on the same track.

However Meares' glory was short-lived, with Germany's Kristina Vogel eclipsing the new mark shortly after with a scorching 10.384secs.

The pair progressed through the remaining sprint rounds unscathed to set up the anticipated final, which was taken by a red-hot Vogel in two straight heats.

In the men's keirin Shane Perkins collected bronze in a crash-marred competition that saw the hospitalisation of two riders from the heats.

In the final, Perkins nestled behind the derny with Great Britain's Matthew Crampton and Dutchman Matthijs Buchli making the first moves as the bike left the track.

German Tobias Wachter surged to the front with two laps to go, with a burst from Crampton on the back straight enough for him to lead it out to the line for the win.

Perkins entered the finishing straight in fifth place, however a burst in the final 50 metres saw him clinch the bronze behind Wachter.
