Australian Olympic team flag bearer Anna Meares has asked her family not to travel to the Games to watch her because of security concerns in Rio.

Her father Tony has revealed the Meares family discussed the issue.

No family members will go to the Olympics, saving Meares any worry about their safety.

"She has a little bit of a concern about the security for visitors, which is what we would be," Tony Meares told AAP.

"What's the best outcome? She was saying `I'd prefer you not to come' and that's just one worry that's eliminated immediately."

Meares' parents Tony and Marilyn were at the Beijing and London Olympics to watch her compete.

Anna Meares also said at Wednesday's flag bearer announcement that she was regularly in contact with team doctors about the Zika virus.

"For me, it's really hard to decipher between hype and reality and I'm just trying to take the information (from) the AOC's medical team," she said.

"For me personally, being female ... it's been really difficult and I'm constantly on the phone to my team doctor.

"I decided to ... `diss' the hype around it.

"Honestly, it may actually be more beneficial to the people of Brazil, to put a spotlight on something they're living with daily."

Meares added the track cycling team had discussed concerns about a mosquito-borne illness that was also raised before the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
