Meares offers tips on cycling safety

Use lights and choose clothes carefully: champion cyclist Anna Meares has offered some tips as she heads a new safety campaign in South Australia.

World and Olympic champion cyclist Anna Meares is offering some simple tips for cyclists on the roads as part of a new safety campaign in South Australia.

"Cycling is my life and I want to be riding for years to come, so I take the time to be safe and be seen," she said on Wednesday.

Her tips include using flashing bike lights both day and night, and always wearing light coloured clothing.

"What you wear will get you noticed. Wearing light and bright clothes helps you stand out from the crowd," she said.

Ms Meares will be the ambassador for SA's Be Safe, Be Seen safety campaign for cyclists.

Road Safety Minister Michael O'Brien says Ms Meares is an inspirational athlete and passionate about cycling safety.

"Adelaide is a great place to ride and popularity is increasing significantly as people become more aware of the health, environmental and financial benefits of cycling," he said.

"Unfortunately, cycling-related incidents are an emerging road safety concern as more people take up cycling."

As well as cyclists taking responsibility for their own safety, Ms Meares says motorists also need to be vigilant, regularly checking mirrors for cyclists and watching for riders at intersections.
