Medals stolen from old war veteran found

Canberra police have recovered a collection of medals stolen from the home of an elderly war veteran earlier this week.

ACT Police have recovered a collection of medals stolen from an elderly Canberra war veteran after appealing to the thief to show some compassion.

A member of the public found the treasured medals and other stolen goods behind a backyard shed in another suburb.

The eight medals were stolen in a burglary of the 92-year-old soldier's home in the southern Canberra suburb of Mawson on Tuesday.

They included the National Medal, Australian Service Medal (1939-1945), War Medal (1939-1945), Pacific Star, 1939-1945 Star and the Defence Medal.

ACT Police said a member of the public reported finding the medals. Other items found were believed stolen in separate burglaries.

Sergeant Louise Denley believes their appeal worked.

"Our message to the offender was that the medals did not have any monetary value but were of sentimental significance to their owner. We'd like to thank the member of the public who found the medals and facilitated their safe return to their rightful owner," she said in a statement.

Police are still hunting the burglar.
