Meehan wins NZ heavyweight event

Kali Meehan emerges victorious at an eight-man heavyweight tournament in Auckland after two years away from boxing.

Expatriate New Zealander Kali Meehan knocked his opponent out in the final to win an eight-man heavyweight boxing tournament in Auckland.

Sydney-based Meehan, 44, put England's Michael Sprott on the canvas in the first round of the final after both had won through by winning their first two fights of the Super 8 elimination tournament on Wednesday.

Meehan, who hadn't fought for two years, accepted a winner's cheque of $NZ200,000 ($A186,000).

There was an upset in the first of seven three-round fights when 41-year-old former world heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman of the United States lost to New Zealand's Antz Nansen on points.
