A Melbourne couple caught up during austerity protests in Athens have been tear-gassed.

A Melbourne couple honeymooning in Athens have been tear gassed during violent austerity protests in the Greek capital.

Rebecca Amore and her husband, both police officers, were caught up in the commotion while enjoying an al fresco dinner on a restaurant balcony, she told 3AW.

Police used tear gas against protesters, which spread inside the restaurant and affected diners' eyes and throats.
