Seventeen cases of salmonella have been confirmed among those who supped on a high tea at a luxury Melbourne hotel.

A Victorian health department spokesman says about 60 people - or about half the guests - became sick after high tea events at The Langham on July 11 and 12, with seven requiring hospitalisation.

A pregnant woman, who was celebrating her baby shower at the hotel, was among those struck down.

Doctors were forced to deliver the woman's baby five weeks early and the newborn suffered breathing problems as a result of a traumatic birth.

Results from the hotel's food samples were still days away, the health spokesman said.

But he said the fact there had been no new cases indicated the cause of the outbreak was no longer there.

A broad investigation into Victoria's recent spike in salmonella cases was also underway, he said.

In the decade to 2010, the number of lab confirmed salmonella cases ranged from 1,000 to 1,900 a year.

But since then there have been over 2,000 cases a year, peaking at 3,695 in 2014.

So far this year there have been 2098 cases.

2012 - 2551

2013 - 2952
