Parking meters that have raised the hackles of residents of a Melbourne suburb have now been targeted by vandals.
People in Yarraville who have been campaigning in vain to keep the meters out of their suburb condemned the vandalism.
Last week 11 meters, which were about to be switched on, were clogged with construction adhesive that caused $40,000 worth of damage.
Then on Wednesday night the vandals struck again and smashed the screens on five more.
The City of Maribyrnong council voted to install paid parking in Yarraville Village last year but they have been met with intense public opposition.
The community group Yarraville Says No to Paid Parking say they are not responsible for the damage and are "extremely disappointed" with the vandals.
"While we certainly understand the anger citizens have regarding the meters that are destroying our village, we urge people to not resort to criminal acts," the group said on Facebook.
"Not only does vandalism cost all of us, it also, we fear, undermines our efforts to get the meters removed."
The City of Maribyrnong council say they will step up patrols of the area.
