A Melbourne man is in a critical condition after fleeing from a moving taxi to avoid paying a fare.

The man and a friend both jumped from the moving cab in the early hours of Monday.

The 22-year-old fell while his friend was unscathed.

Royal Melbourne Hospital Head of Emergency Professor George Braitberg said the man's injuries were significant.

"He has been to the operating room and is not in our intensive care unit but he has very significant injuries," he told reporters.

A 35-year-old Footscray man turned himself in to police on Monday morning.

He has been arrested and is assisting police.
