Melb transport workers await better offers

Industrial action by Melbourne tram and train drivers is still on the cards as union members consider new offers from their employers.

Train and tram stoppages across Melbourne are still on the cards as public transport workers consider new offers from Metro Trains and Yarra Trams.

Public transport workers cancelled plans for four-hour work stoppages on Friday in favour of a rally after tram and train management agreed to resume enterprise negotiations.

A new offer from Metro Trains had been expected about 5pm on Friday.

But if negotiations deteriorate, it is possible Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) members will walk off the job.

"If we don't get a fair and reasonable deal to put to our members ... that four-hour stoppage will go on," RTBU national secretary Bob Nanva told a rally of about 500 members on Friday.

The union's Victorian branch secretary, Luba Grigorovitch, says members will continue the fight for what they deserve.

"Delegates and members have said if (Friday's offer) is rubbish, we will continue action," she told AAP on Friday.

Public transport workers do not want to take industrial action unless it is necessary, Mr Nanva said.

"We acted in good faith by withdrawing this week's tram and train stoppages, but good faith when you're being slapped in the face will only last so long," he said.
