Melbourne airport tower evacuated

Bushfire smoke is believed to have set off smoke alarms at Melbourne Airport's control tower, triggering an evacuation

Bushfire smoke has triggered an evacuation of Melbourne Airport's control tower, causing flights to be delayed.

Smoke from the bushfires apparently activated smoke alarms in the tower just after 2pm (AEDT) on Tuesday, an Airservices Australia spokeswoman said.

As a precaution, staff were evacuated for about 30 minutes, causing arrivals to be delayed and departures to be temporarily grounded.

The spokeswoman said once staff were back in the tower normal operations resumed within 10 minutes.
