Shelters across Melbourne have been taking in scores of dogs spooked by New Year's Eve fireworks.

The Lost Dogs' Home says it's only the beginning of a busy period, with summer storms, illegal fireworks and Australia Day celebrations making January a busy month.

Dog ambulances delivered 98 dogs and two puppies to shelters in North Melbourne and Cranbourne on Wednesday night.

Shelter general manager Sue Conroy said up to 150 dogs had been collected in previous years because of a combination of fireworks and storms.

"If you've woken up to find your pet missing, please do not put it off... go directly to your shelter," she said.

Ms Conroy said dogs with a microchip, council tag and collar tag with up-to-date contact information were reunited with their owners more quickly.
