Melbourne asylum policy protesters rally

Around 500 protesters have gathered to mourn the death of asylum seeker Omid and call for offshore detention centres to be closed.

Hundreds of people gathered in Melbourne's CBD to voice opposition to the federal government's treatment of asylum seekers and call for the closure of offshore detention centres.

Around 500 peaceful but vocal demonstrators also mourned the asylum seeker known as Omid, who died on Friday after setting himself on fire.

Protesters, including federal Greens MP Adam Bandt, marched from the State Library to Liberal Party headquarters on Exhibition Street.
