Melbourne boy, 3, reunited with mum

A mum is holding onto her three-year-old son very tightly after he escaped from their Melbourne home in the night and wandered the streets in his pyjamas.

An adventurous three-year-old boy has unlocked the front door of his Melbourne home in the middle of the night and roamed the streets barefoot wearing just his blue pyjamas.

A passerby brought the boy to the Melton police station about 2am on Tuesday after finding him wandering along Morris St in Melton but he was unable to give his name or his parents' names.

It was about four hours later his panic-struck mother woke up, realised her son was missing and was eventually reunited with him at the station.

Inspector Katherine Rudkins told Nine News the boy escaped after unlocking his front door.

Insp Rudkins said his mother was "quite distraught" about her son doing a runner in the night.

"(She's) very relieved. I saw them this morning when I arrived at the police station and she was holding him very tightly," she said.

"It is quite a thing for a three-year-old to do."

Police say the boy is in good health.
