Melbourne crane saga finally ends

The threat to residents of a precariously leaning crane in inner Melbourne has ended as the 40-metre machine was finally dismantled.

A construction site saga that shut down part of inner Melbourne and forced scores of people out of their homes has finally come to an end.

Worksafe engineers left the Richmond site on Thursday having dismantled the last pieces of a 40-metre crane that had leaned over Melbourne properties since strong winds destabilised it on Monday.

Bridge Road and Lennox Street in a busy precinct just outside central Melbourne were closed for two to three days as crews set about the delicate work of removing the huge machine.

Residents had been forced to evacuate on Monday night and were taken to an emergency centre at Richmond Town Hall.

Some returned home the next day while those with homes closest to the danger spent a second night away.

State Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said there would be an investigation once the crane is removed.

"As soon as that is done in a safe manner when the weather permits, then there will be a WorkSafe investigation," he said on Wednesday.

WorkSafe hasn't ruled out laying charges over the incident, sparked by the crane's arm bending backwards, scattering broken pieces.
