Liberal frontbencher Christopher Pyne is expecting a Melbourne Cup field to run for Speaker.

The coalition party room will meet on Monday to select a candidate for the speakership, who parliament will later endorse at its first sitting since the winter break.

"It's a Melbourne Cup field and whoever is successful will do a fantastic job," Mr Pyne told Sky News.

"It'll be a champagne day on Monday for the winner and I will work with whoever wins those stakes."

Queensland Liberal National MP Ross Vasta is the latest to put his hand up for the job, vacated by Bronwyn Bishop over the expenses scandal.

Victoria's Tony Smith and South Australia's Andrew Southcott are considered frontrunners, ahead of Mr Vasta and veteran MPs Russell Broadbent and Philip Ruddock.

While West Australian MP Ken Wyatt has been mentioned as a possible late entry, he told AAP he had not been approached by colleagues.
