More than 30 firefighters were called to a suspicious blaze at a factory in west Melbourne.

The public called the MFB over smoke pouring from the factory on the corner of Adderley and Dryburgh Streets shortly before 9pm on Saturday and a sprinkler alarm went off.

Fire crews had to wear breathing apparatus in the building and initially struggled to find the centre of the fire due to the building's layout and stock.

There was evidence at the scene that the fire was suspicious and police have been contacted.
