A six-year-old Melbourne girl told she wasn't allowed to ditch her winter dress has won the right to wear pants to school.

Grade one student Asha Carris and her mother, Simone, launched an online petition after the student's request to wear pants instead of a tunic and stockings was rejected.

Principal Anne Doherty, of Our Lady of the Nativity in Aberdeldie, said it hadn't been a blanket "no", but there had been a miscommunication.

Asha is allowed to wear her pants and the school uniform is being reviewed.
