Melbourne happy to wait for key NBL import

NBL champions Melbourne United say they have three players in mind for their third import spot but aren't in any rush to lock down the position.

NBL champions Melbourne United feel they have the roster depth to play the waiting game on signing a third import.

United last week announced they had re-signed championship-winning American duo Josh Boone and Casper Ware Jr. for a third season in Melbourne.

They have also lured exciting Boomers player Mitch McCarron from Cairns, forward Dan Trist, who has played in Europe since graduating from US college Lafayette in 2015, and former New Zealand international Alex Pledger.

However, the search continues for a player to replace superstar Casey Prather, who has joined Russian team Khimki.

Chief executive Vince Crivelli said on Tuesday United had options in mind but wouldn't be rushed into signing just anyone.

"We've had our eyes on three players for some time but it's a really shifting marketplace and there's a lot of things happening on a daily basis with guying getting waived from Exhibit 10 contracts (a one-year, non-guaranteed NBA contract) in the US while there's a lot of movement in Europe as well," he said.

"Coupled with the fact that we feel like we've got a really good Australian core, we're not in a great rush to just go out and sign a player.

"We're very specific with the needs of the team and our mandate is to try to find the player Dean (coach Dean Vickerman) has described and that's proving a little challenging."

Melbourne's vacancy is for a small forward/power forward role, filling the hole left by swingman Prather as well as Tai Wesley's departure to the New Zealand Breakers.

Crivelli said he was confident they would have someone locked down before their trip to the USA for the pre-season NBA games against the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors in late September-early October.
