Melbourne hoon loses his wheels

A 26-year-old Melbourne man has had his Toyota Hilux impounded after he was detected travelling at 144km/h in an 80km/h zone.

A hoon driver has been caught travelling more than 60km over the speed limit on Melbourne's West Gate Freeway.

The 26-year-old had his Toyota Hilux impounded for 30 days when he was nabbed doing 144km/h in an 80km/h zone at Port Melbourne at about 1.45am on Friday.

When intercepted by police, the driver told officers he thought he was only doing 110km/h.

The St Albans man is expected to be charged on summons with speeding.
