A man has died from a single gunshot wound after being dumped outside a Melbourne hospital.

The 25-year-old Berwick man was one of two injured men left outside Casey Hospital in the city's southeast at 12.40am.

Inspector Mick Hughes says the men are known to police and that a third man entered the hospital before leaving in a white Holden Commodore sedan.

A 26-year-old Upper Beaconsfield man is in a critical condition with head and chest injuries and has not provided any details to police.

"He appears to have been assaulted," Insp Hughes said.

The Berwick man had spoken to family members at 10pm on Friday night.

Police believe the driver, a man in his 20s, had an injured arm.
