Melbourne man on terror sanctions list

Melbourne man Neil Prakash has been listed on a United Nations financial terror sanctions list.

A Melbourne man now in Syria has been placed on a United Nations financial terror sanctions list by Australia.

It will be a criminal offence, punishable by 10 years' jail, for anyone to directly or indirectly provide material support to Australian citizen Neil Prakash.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Prakash had sought to commission terror acts in Australia, use social media to spread violent extremism and recruit young women and girls to travel to Syria, and Iraq to join Islamic State.

Other terror suspects Mohamed Elomar and Khaled Sharrouf are also on the list.

Ms Bishop said 93 people and entities from Australia and around the world had now been listed for financial sanctions.

"We are committed to starve this terrorist organisation Daesh of foreign fighters from Australia and elsewhere, to starve it of funds, resources, so that we can combat terrorism and keep our people safe," she told parliament.
