A Melbourne man accused of hitting a dog on the head with a mallet in front of shocked bystanders is likely to face charges following the animal's death.
Police say they have interviewed a 50-year-old Harcourt man over the alleged attack in Castlemaine.
The attack is said to have occurred at 11am on May 9 while the border collie was tied up in the back of a ute parked on Templeton Street.
Witnesses have told media they saw the man walk past the dog to his car before returning with a mallet, which he allegedly used to hit the dog.
The dog, was taken to a nearby veterinary hospital for treatment and returned home with his owner but died on Thursday after a brain haemorrhage.
Police say the man is likely to face charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which carry a penalty of up to 12 months' jail.
