A young boy has been reunited with his parents after he was left behind during a family trip to a Melbourne market.

Security staff at the Laverton market noticed the boy sitting alone on a bench about 2.30pm on Saturday.

By the time the market closed, the boy's parents had not returned but when the four-year-old's family saw him on TV they immediately contacted police.

He is now on his way home to Point Cook.
