Forget the stork, it was three quick-thinking cops at a Melbourne police station that delivered a baby.

A Springvale couple pulled into their local police station on Wednesday morning after realising they wouldn't make it to hospital.

Sergeant Max Walker said the baby was almost already out when police reached the vehicle.

"The baby was literally just coming out straight away," Sgt Walker told AAP.

The baby girl was delivered in the car park and at first appeared blue and non-responsive.

"It wasn't initially breathing and we cleared the mouth and gave initial first aid, comforted the mother and called the ambulance service," Sgt Walker said.

The baby girl's brother was in the back of the car and witnessed the birth of his sister.

"There was a little guy in a car seat in the back that was very wide-eyed and wondering why his mother was screaming so much," Sgt Walker said.

The event proved an exciting morning for police, who were happy to help the couple.

"Lots of policing involves negative things, so it's nice to be able to do something positive," he said.

Paramedics, who arrived minutes after the birth, took the couple and the baby to Dandenong Hospital.
