Melbourne taxi driver bashed by passengers

A Melbourne taxi driver has been punched and kicked after asking a verbally abusive passenger to get out of his car.

A Melbourne taxi driver punched and kicked by passengers says they told him they would kill him.

Police are hunting three men who hailed Henry Kochhar's taxi near the Notting Hill Hotel about 1am on Sunday.

One of them allegedly became verbally and racially abusive toward Mr Kochhar, yelling that he was going the wrong way.

Mr Kochhar told the Seven Network one of the men threatened his life.

"He said `you know I'm going to bash you, we're going to kill you and we're going to take your car away'," he said.

Mr Kochhar said he pulled over to let the men out, telling them he would call the police, but they responded that the officers wouldn't do anything because they were drunk.

Police say that's when the man who was verbally abusive punched Mr Kochhar a number of times in the face.

He then asked one of the other men to hit the driver with a bottle, while a second man kicked Mr Kochhar in the stomach.

Mr Kochhar only suffered minor injuries.

Police have released CCTV images of the three men, who fled along Ferntree Gully Road and hailed a second taxi.
