Melbourne the world's most liveable city

Melbourne has topped the global rankings of the world's most liveable cities for the fifth time while Adelaide is rated fifth.

For those who live in Melbourne it's no surprise the city has been named the world's most liveable city for the fifth consecutive year.

The city has topped the Economist Intelligence Unit's annual global liveability ranking, beating Austria's capital Vienna by just 0.1 point.

Adelaide came in equal fifth position with Calgary, the third Canadian city in the top five along with Vancouver and Toronto.

Sydney and Perth both made it into the top 10, coming into the list in seventh and eight position.

Brisbane ranked 18th in the world.

The rankings give Australia four cities in the top 10 worldwide, followed by Canada with three in the top 10.

Tripoli, Lagos, Port Moresby, Dhaka and Damascus ranked as the five least liveable cities out of the 140 surveyed.
