Melbourne trains chugging on time

Public transport in Melbourne has exceeded government-set performance standards for the 25th month in a row.

Melbourne's public transport system can, and should, improve despite exceeding state-set performance standards for the 25th consecutive month, the transport minister says.

Metro delivered 92.7 per cent of services on time in May, exceeding the 88 per cent benchmark set in its state government contract for the 25th month in a row.

Despite the figures, Transport Minister Terry Mulder said Melbourne's public transport system should be doing better.

"We don't accept 88 per cent, which is the benchmark of Metro. We think it should be closer to 95 per cent," Mr Mulder said on Friday.

"We're going to push them as hard as we can to get that improved punctuality."

But even with improving numbers, station skipping continues to occur on the state's rail network.

Mr Mulder said station skipping incidents are "very very small" comparative to overall services and are closely monitored by governing body PTV.

The Frankston line has been the most improved since May 2010, upping its on-time performance from 62.6 per cent to 90.7 per cent.

Train punctuality has improved by 10 per cent over the past four years across the entire network.
