Melbourne web address up and running

Melbourne's new city-specific web address will go live within hours; the Melbourne Festival and Bank of Melbourne are among the first businesses to use it.

Melbourne's own top-level domain name (TLD) will be launched on Wednesday.

Melbourne's well-known Flower Drum restaurant, the Melbourne Festival and Bank of Melbourne are among the first businesses to adopt the new web address: .melbourne.

For example, the Melbourne Festival's new online address is www.festival.melbourne.

ARI Registry Services, the Melbourne-based technology company managing .melbourne, said the launch will mark one of the most significant technology infrastructure projects in Victoria.

"A .melbourne web address will allow Victorian businesses and individuals to show an online affiliation to the city and increase geographical relevance to their target audience," ARI chief executive Adrian Kinderis said.

"There is also potential for businesses to be rewarded with added search engine optimisation benefits."

Melbourne is the first Australian city to have its own TLD.

The global governing body for domain names, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has been gradually releasing some of 1,400 new TLDs since late 2013.

The new TLDs, which join .com, .net and .au on the internet, will help internet users find information about events and businesses in their city faster and more efficiently.

Users can get city-specific information and avoid the clutter of getting details about similar events or businesses in other cities or other countries.
