A foot injury has prompted Melbourne goalsneak Shannon Byrnes to retire from the AFL.

Byrnes, a dual premiership player with Geelong before joining the Demons at the end of 2012, will miss the remainder of the season.

The 30-year-old, who hasn't played an AFL game since round eight this season, is disappointed the injury caused his early retirement.

"You can't pick and choose when your injuries come ... I have had a pretty good run," he told Melbourne's website on Wednesday.

"It's a little bit bittersweet but I will look back on my career with a lot more fond memories than disappointments."

Byrnes played 131 AFL matches, including 108 with Geelong, where he won premierships in 2007 and 2009.
