Melbourne's 'common sense' metro names

The names of Melbourne's newest train stations were all chosen for "commonsense" reasons, Premier Daniel Andrews says.

Passengers hoping to step aboard at Smashed Avo to get off at Arden Schwarzenegger will be disappointed - Melbourne's newest train stations have all been given "common sense" names.

There were more than 50,000 public submissions made to name the $11 billion Melbourne Metro Tunnel stations, including titles inspired by Game of Thrones, The Simpsons, AFL, and breakfast foods.

But, despite "many humorous, interesting suggestions", Premier Daniel Andrews and public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan have gone for the obvious options.

The stations will be State Library, Town Hall, Parkville and the one near the Shrine of Remembrance will be called Anzac.

The new station at Arden will be named North Melbourne, and the current North Melbourne station will be renamed West Melbourne to better reflect its location.

"We've gone with the common sense option," Mr Andrews told reporters.

"We always have to remember this is how people move through the city not just locals, but tourists, and there's also some considerations around emergency services being able to clearly understand where they need to go."

Mr Andrews said the fact that the sensible names were chosen did not mean the competition was pointless.

"It was important to give people a chance to have their say," he said.

But opposition spokesman for public transport David Davis said the government should never have run a "costly taxpayer funded PR exercise" asking for people to name the stations.

"After eight weeks of public consultation and more than 50,000 suggestions, Daniel Andrews ignores the entire process," he said in a statement.

"The opposition will submit a Freedom of Information request to find out how much this so-called consultation cost and what the results actually were."
