Melbourne's Greek community hopeful

Despite a no vote to harsher austerity measures in Greece, Melbourne's Greek community believes it will end in a better deal for the country.

Melbourne's Greek community is hopeful Greece's "no vote" to harsher austerity measures will lead to a better outcome.

Hundreds came together in Melbourne on Monday morning to watch the vote unfold at the Greek Centre on Lonsdale Street from 6am.

"For many of them it was emotional, they've watched the country descend into social and economical disruption," Greek Community of Melbourne president Bill Papastergiadis told AAP.

"The no vote gives the opportunity for the Greeks to show some pride and determination."

The vote was never to break away from the European Union but will give the Greek government more power in negotiations, he said.
