Australia's Adam Melling is continuing to show his sterling form of last year in Portugal, progressing to the third round at the Cascais pro.
The defending Cascais Trophy champion perfectly exploited the double-overhead sets at Guincho with his signature power carves in Wednesday's second heat.
With a score of 14.50, he edged out New Zealander Billy Stairman (14.13) and compatriot Connor O'Leary (12.90).
"I had a good run here last year, it started over in the Azores and finished up in Cascais," Melling said.
"It all just came together for me, luck went my way, and that seems to be happening out here as well."
He lines up next with Brazil's Italo Ferreira and Marco Fernandez in the second heat of the next round.
Fellow Australians Davey Cathels and Stu Kennedy also topped their second heats, scoring 10.57 and 12.56 respectively.
Along with O'Leary, Mitchel Coleborn, Jack Freestone, Yadin Nicol and Bede Durbidge were the other Australians eliminated on Wednesday.
