Not even a luxury hotel foyer pond could protect a metre-long barramundi that was shot with a spear gun and filleted.

Three 18-year-old Cairns men have been charged after one of them allegedly shot the fish and left the Cairns hotel with it last Wednesday.

Police say the trio then took the fish to a house where they cleaned and filleted it.

But it's believed they didn't get the chance to eat the fish, which police say had been living in the fresh water pond for years.

The men were arrested the night after the killing when they allegedly returned to the Hilton Double Tree hotel so the shooter could take a picture of an albino fish living in the same pond.

They will all appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 21 charged with trespassing and unlawfully killing an animal later this month.
